The World's First Offshore Power Station
15th June 2010
 |
The narrow straits at Kylerhea, between Skye and Glenelg, has been selected as the site of what may be the World's first offshore Power Station. Sheffield based Pulse Tidal has commenced a year long environmental study before making application for a licence to start producing 1.2MW of renewable electricty in 2012. The powerful tidal stream will move horizotal blades up and down to drive the generator which will sit on the seabed totally submerged. Increasing the number of generators from one to eight would increase the power produced to 9.6MW, enough to supply electricity to over 5,500 homes. Pulse Tidal has successfully tested a trial device in the Humber Estuary and has received a grant of £6.8 million from the EU to develop a commercial generator. |
