Willie McRae, Police re-open his case
10th February 2011
Northern Constabulary are to reinvestigate the mysterious death of controversial SNP activist Willie McRae.
Mr McRae, a prominent lawyer and anti-nuclear campaigner, was found dead in his crashed car off the A87 in Wester Ross in April 1985. His death was initially thought to be the result of the crash but examination in hospital subsequently revealed that he had died from a single gunshot wound to the head. A handgun was found some distance from the car, causing speculation as to how Mr McRae could have shot himself in the head and then thrown the gun away.
The State has always denied involvement or that Mr McRae was under surveillance by the security services but many believe that he was murdered. He had been on his way from his home in Glasgow to Dornie where he retained the family cottage. A Glasgow policeman who knew him well stated at the time that he had seen two men covertly watching Mr McRae and then follow him as he set off on his journey.
The Crown Office has instructed the police to make new enquiries, following new information relating to phone calls made to a former police officer last year.
For many years an informal cairn stood close by the A87 to mark the place where Mr McRae died. Several years ago this was replaced by a more substantial structure bearing a commemorative plaque. Curiously, a ditch has been dug along the roadside preventing motorists from pulling into the layby and visiting the cairn. Was this the action of the local authority and, if so, why was it done? There are a number of other laybys along this stretch of road and this is the only one to have been so blocked off.
