One of the World's Most Scenic Drives
2 July 2012
Visitors to Kintail may have experienced the exhilarating drive up the single track mountain road that connects Lochcarron with Applecross. If you haven't, then you really should!
National Geographic has just listed the road as one of the World's Most Scenic Drives, featured in a book of that name to be published this week. The former cattle track twists and turns through spectacular mountain scenery as it climbs from sea level to 2000 feet around a series of heart stopping hairpin bends. The Pass of the Cattle, or Bealach na Ba, is a not to be missed experience for travellers in the area.
But don't stop at Applecross. The road continues north along the coast, passing a series of settlements some long since abandoned as a result of the notorious Clearances, with jaw dropping views across the Inner Sound to the islands of Raasay and Rona. At Fearmore the road turns west and the landscape changes, offering tantalising views of little coves as you head for Shieldaig and the main A896.
The journey is equally impressive and enjoyable, whether made from north to south or vice versa.
Excellent food and refreshments are to be found at both Applecross and Shieldaig but very little in between!
