My ancestors, Duncan McRae and his wife, Mary McLeod were married at Glenelg Parish in 1821. Their first son, Finlay, was born in Van Kleek Hill, Ontario, Canada in 1825. My ancestor, John McRae was born at the Parish of Lochiel, West Hawksbury, Ontario, Canada but the family purchased property in Kenyon, Glengarry, Ontario, Canada, Concession 9, Lot 20.

Family rumor says that Mary was married prior to a Chisholm and had two children: Roderick and Mary. I found mention of Roderick death as the first buried at Dunvegan Church in Kenyon, Glengarry, Ontario, Canada. Mary and Duncan's last son, Colin, was the first child baptised at the church and the church notes that his mother, Mary, died at his birth.

I have been unsucessful at finding Duncan or Mary's birth, or parents. In their marriage register at Glenelg Duncan reports that he is a shephard of Eileanriach.

If naming patterns were followed I would say that Duncan's father would be Finlay and his mother, More, or Sarah. Mary's father would be Malcolm, and mother, Euphemia "Harriet."

Any of this sound familiar to anyone out there?

Hi there. My name is Iain MacRae and I have recently been trying to decipher some family records that were given to me by my father.

I don't think this is much help, but it seems that my g.g.g. grandfather, Murdo(ch) MacRae (b. 1789) immigrated to Canada in 1831. One of his sons, Donald, purchased the north half of Concession 7, Lot 30 (100 acres), in Kenyon Township, in 1853. I also see that there were later purchases of part of Lot 31 and all of Lot 32. I also see that Concession 8/9, Lots 24/25 were also purchased by my g.g. grandfather Donald and were bequeathed to one of his daughters Sarah. Concession 9, Lot 29 was split between 2 of Murdo's sons, John and Alexander (McRae). My grandfather (Donald) grew up on one of those properties and it was only about 20 years ago that my great-uncle Duncan died and the land was sold off. Anyway, that doesn't help a whole lot, but it seems our ancestors would have known each other.
