Hello from BC My husband is a double McRae. Looking for information on (1) Donald McRae who at one time was a groundskeeper for Lord Aberdeen sometime in the early 1800's. He ended up in BC via the US. Also...looking for John McRae who married Ann Urquhart in Ontario in 1858. He died in 1883. Have no record of his parents although lots on hers. John and Ann had a son, John, who moved to BC and became reeve in Agassiz and later MLA here. John (jr) moved to BC between 1886 and 1890. Thanks very much. Andrea

Hi Andrea; I have a couple of Donald's, one b1865 in Cullen, Banff, Scotland and died in Yukon Territory ?. No record of wife or children. He was the son of Kenneth McRae b1833 and Margaret Urquhart b1837 both from Resolis, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland and died in Alliston, Ontario. Kenneth was the son of Donald McRae b? and Mary Matheson b? assumed both from Resolis. I don't know if there is any direct connection. Gord

Hi, Andrea, I have many Urquharts in Glengarry but am also looking at Urquharts in Agassiz, specifically Mary Ann Urquhart who married John Alexander McRae and then her sister Elizabeth Ann Urquhart who later married the same John Alexander McRae. I have some information on the John McRaes who came from Glengarry to Manitoba then to Agassiz. Anyway, the Urquhart sisters were, I believe, siblings of my Urquhart ancestors in Glengarry. Also, have you talked with Judy Hassall, a very knowlegeable member of these McRaes. Also, do you know my relatives Ken and Debbie Schwarzle in Sumas? Cheers, Bill

Hello. It looks like I have finally found my way back into this forum. I'm hoping this is a reply to Bill Lamberton. John A McRae was a different McRae here in Agassiz than my husband (John McRae)'s grandfather. However, I do have history books of Agassiz and I will look up the Urquharts. John's Aunt Isabelle married a Mr. Urquhart...but off-had I can't think of his name. I do know a Ken and Debbie Schwaerzle but they are here in Agassiz. Sumas is in Washington State...just across the line but about 50 miles from here. Ken and Debbie are farmers here. I'm going to look up some information and if you don't hear from me for awhile it's only because I'm lost in this forum again. Feel free to email me directly though. Thanks for the information and I'll talk to you soon. Andrea

Hi again, Andrea, I stand corrected. I have been to Ken and Debbie's only once and was thinking that their place was in Sumas Prairie Anyway, Debbie's uncle Brian Peterson was married to my wife's late sister, Susan. Thereby the family connection. My wife Carole and I have a place in Vancouver and will be there late afternoon tomorrow until next Wed. or Thurs. Ph. 604-732-1109. There are far too many McRaes and Urquharts and all named John and they seemed to move in mass migrations from Glengarry to Melita/Elva and then further west to Agassiz/ Mission/ Van. I don,t know how the Clan website handles email but I can do a better job by emailing or faxing what I have. One of my ancestors was an Ann Nancy McRae, b. in Lancaster in Glengarry, ON in 1784 but that is too far back and I have not been able to find anything for sure about her parents, siblings, etc. Well that is about as brief that I can make this gibberish and hope to contact you this weekend. Regards, Bill

Hi Bill I found the marriage records for John Alexander McRae and Lizzy Ann Urquahrt in the BC Vital statistics. They were married March 7, 1911. However, I can't see the he was born in Agassiz or that there were any Urquharts born here...so..I'm going to check BC and then assume they came from Ontario. Was looking for the sister's death record thinking she might have been living here too but all McRae deaths in Agassiz are known to us. You mentioned you have a place in Vanc. By the phone number you must be in the Kits area or thereabouts? Where is your permanent home? You are certainly correct in how many McRae's there are....they all had so many children and it sounds like there were a couple of dozen very favourite names. Very confusing..but I'm enjoying this. Hope you have a great vacation if you're just holidaying in town. Talk to you soon. Regards, Andrea

Hello again Bill John Alexander McRae was born on January 15, 1863 in Glengarry ON. He married Mary Ann in 1900. ON death records show her as having died in 1912. However BC shows him marrying Lizzy in 1911 so there may be some room for error there. John's parents were Farquhar and Margaret(nee Algar). Farquhar was born in 1813 and died in 1884...both in Ontario. Farquhar's father was ALSO John McRae born around 1787 and married to Isabella Chisholm, born around 1791. Interestingly Margaret (wife of Farquhar) was born in Stavely Alberta..where she also died. Her mother, however, was a Sarah McRae from...you guessed it..Glengarry Co. Ontario. My goodness...it's SO interesting. Regards. Andrea

Dear Andrea, my grandparents purchased a large farm in Agassiz called Glenwood and I believe it was formerly owned by John McCrae. It was a beautifuly farm with a very large Tudor Style home. Agassiz has now expanded onto the farm and the main Glenwood house is now a large elderly care home with a very modern addition. I can probably locate a picture of the home if you would like.
