My name is Jimi McRae, aka Jimi the Piper, and I'm presently researching a new musical project which will hopefully document bagpipe tunes relating to Clan MacRae for posterity. So far I have unearthed several interesting pieces not least the tune played by the pipers in the 78th Seaforth Highlanders when they mutinied and marched to Arthur's Seat in 1788. Can anyone tell me whether the author of the well known Highland air "We will return home to Kintail" took part in the mutiny. I have always been encouraged to believe that the ballad was composed by sergeant Christopher MacRae who served with the 78th Seaforth Highlanders and participated in the mutiny. Is this factually correct? More info relating to the writings of sergeant MacRae would also be gratefully appreciated. Are full transcripts of his work available in English?
Thank you. Jimi McRae (piper at the 2000 and 2005 Clan MacRae Gatherings).
